Artist of the Month

April 2012

Andy Warhol

(August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987)

Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art.

Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.

February 2012

Jean-Michel Basquiat

December 22, 1960 - August 12, 1988

I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life.

I don't listen to what art critics say. I don't know anybody who needs a critic to find out what art is.

Believe it or not, I can actually draw.

I am not a black artist, I am an artist.

I start a picture and I finish it.

Jan 2012

Ansel Adams

Feb. 20 1902 — Apr. 22, 1984

A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.

A photograph is usually looked at - seldom looked into.

A good photograph is knowing where to stand.

In my mind's eye, I visualize how a particular... sight and feeling will appear on a print. If it excites me, there is a good chance it will make a good photograph. It is an intuitive sense, an ability that comes from a lot of practice.

It is horrifying that we have to fight our own government to save the environment.

In wisdom gathered over time I have found that every experience is a form of exploration.

It is my intention to present - through the medium of photography - intuitive observations of the natural world which may have meaning to the spectators.

Norman Rockwell

February 3, 1894 – November 8, 1978

"Right from the beginning, I always strived to capture everything I saw as completely as possible. "

"No man with a conscience can just bat out illustrations. He's got to put all his talent and feeling into them!"

"The secret to so many artists living so long is that every painting is a new adventure. So, you see, they're always looking ahead to something new and exciting. The secret is not to look back. "

Leonardo Da Vinci

April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519

I have offended God and mankind because my work didn't reach the quality it should have.

I have wasted my hours.

He who wishes to be rich in a day will be hanged in a year.

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.

He who is fixed to a star does not change his mind.

He who loves practice without theory is like the sailor who boards ship without a rudder and compass and never knows where he may cast.

I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.

Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation... even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind.

Common Sense is that which judges the things given to it by other senses.

Just as courage imperils life, fear protects it.

A well-spent day brings happy sleep.

Learning never exhausts the mind.

Men of lofty genius when they are doing the least work are most active.

Nothing strengthens authority so much as silence.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art.

There are three classes of people: those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see.

Water is the driving force of all nature.

Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art.

Where there is shouting, there is no true knowledge.

Who sows virtue reaps honor.

The noblest pleasure is the joy of understanding.

Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?

Time stays long enough for anyone who will use it.

The truth of things is the chief nutriment of superior intellects.

Life well spent is long.

Oct 2011

(6 March 1475 – 18 February 1564)

I am still learning.

I hope that I may always desire more than I can accomplish.

I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.

Genius is eternal patience.

Faith in oneself is the best and safest course.

Carving is easy, you just go down to the skin and stop.

A man paints with his brains and not with his hands.

Sept 2011

31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954

Creativity takes courage.

He who loves, flies, runs, and rejoices; he is free and nothing holds him back.

I don't paint things. I only paint the difference between things.

I have been no more than a medium, as it were.

I don't know whether I believe in God or not. I think, really, I'm some sort of Buddhist. But the essential thing is to put oneself in a frame of mind which is close to that of prayer.

I'm growing old, I delight in the past.

Impressionism is the newspaper of the soul.

It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else.

With color one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft.

Work cures everything.

Aug 2011

Camille Pissarro

10 July 1830 – 13 November 1903

Blessed are they who see beautiful things in humble places where other people see nothing.

Don't be afraid in nature: one must be bold, at the risk of having been deceived and making mistakes.

It is absurd to look for perfection.

Paint the essential character of things.

God takes care of imbeciles, little children and artists.

July 2011

June 2011

Everyone has talent at twenty-five. The difficulty is to have it at fifty.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

In painting you must give the idea of the true by means of the false.

It is all very well to copy what one sees, but it is far better to draw what one now only sees in one's memory. That is a transformation in which imagination collaborates with memory.

Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do.

Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.

No art is less spontaneous than mine. What I do is the result of reflection and the study of the great masters.

One must do the same subject over again ten times, a hundred times. In art nothing must resemble an accident, not even movement.

Edgar Degas

19 July 1834 – 27 September 1917

May 2011

Paul Cezanne

Jan 19, 1839-Oct 22, 1906

For an Impressionist to paint from nature is not to paint the subject, but to realize sensations.

I am more a friend of art than a producer of painting.

I must be more sensible and realize that at my age, illusions are hardly permitted and they will always destroy me.

I lack the magnificent richness of color that animates nature.

I have nothing to hide in art. The initial force alone can bring anyone to the end he must attain.

I could paint for a hundred years, a thousand years without stopping and I would still feel as though I knew nothing.

I have sworn to die painting.

I am a pupil of Pissarro.

I ask you to pray for me, for once age has overtaken us, we find consolation only in religion.

I am the primitive of the method I have invented.

Genius is the ability to renew one's emotions in daily experience.

Doubtless there are things in nature which have not yet been seen. If an artist discovers them, he opens the way for his successors.

Don't be an art critic. Paint. There lies salvation.

Art is a harmony parallel with nature.

An art which isn't based on feeling isn't an art at all.

A puny body weakens the soul.

Is art really the priesthood that demands the pure in heart who belong to it wholly?

You say a new era in art is preparing; you sensed it coming; continue your studies without weakening. God will do the rest.

A thousand painters ought to be killed yearly. Say what you like: I'm every inch a painter.

I've come to the conclusion that it's not really possible to help others.

It's so fine and yet so terrible to stand in front of a blank canvas.

Painting is damned difficult - you always think you've got it, but you haven't.

Tell me, do you think I'm going mad? I sometimes wonder, you know.

The most seductive thing about art is the personality of the artist himself.

The painter must enclose himself within his work; he must respond not with words, but with paintings.

A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.

When I judge art, I take my painting and put it next to a God made object like a tree or flower. If it clashes, it is not art.

With a painter's temperament, all that's needed are the means of expression sufficient to be intelligible to the wide public.

The truth is in nature, and I shall prove it.

With an apple I will astonish Paris.

APRIL 2011

PABLO PICASSOion is the fou

Pablo Picasso

Oct 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.

Action is the foundational key to all success.

All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.

Art is the elimination of the unnecessary.

Are we to paint what's on the face, what's inside the face, or what's behind it?

Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we don't start measuring her limbs.

Bad artists copy. Good artists steal.

Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.

Disciples be damned. It's not interesting. It's only the masters that matter. Those who create.

Every act of creation is first an act of destruction.

Every positive value has its price in negative terms... the genius of Einstein leads to Hiroshima.

Give me a museum and I'll fill it.

He can who thinks he can, and he can't who thinks he can't. This is an inexorable, indisputable law.

I do not seek. I find.

I don't believe in accidents. There are only encounters in history. There are no accidents.

I begin with an idea and then it becomes something else.

I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.

Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.

It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.

My mother said to me, 'If you are a soldier, you will become a general. If you are a monk, you will become the Pope.' Instead, I was a painter, and became Picasso.

Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.

Love is the greatest refreshment in life.

I'd like to live as a poor man with lots of money.

Painting is a blind man's profession. He paints not what he sees, but what he feels, what he tells himself about what he has seen.

Painting is just another way of keeping a diary

Success is dangerous. One begins to copy oneself, and to copy oneself is more dangerous than to copy others. It leads to sterility.

The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place: from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider's web.

The chief enemy of creativity is "good" sense.

Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.

The people who make art their business are mostly imposters.

You have to have an idea of what you are going to do, but it should be a vague idea.

Claude Monet: Master of Light

No one is an artist unless he carries his picture in his head before painting it, and is sure of his method and composition.

Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.

People discuss my art and pretend to understand as if it were necessary to understand, when it's simply necessary to love.

I am following Nature without being able to grasp her, I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.

I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.

My life has been nothing but a failure.

- Claude Monet

The Genius That Is Vincent Van Gogh

"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together."

"I dream of painting and then I paint my dream."

"I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process."

"If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced."

"It is better to be high-spirited even though one makes more mistakes, than to be narrow-minded and all too prudent."

"Love always brings difficulties, that is true, but the good side of it is that it gives energy."

"Painting is a faith, and it imposes the duty to disregard public opinion."

"Paintings have a life of their own that derives from the painter's soul."

"If one is master of one thing and understands one thing well, one has at the same time, insight into and understanding of many things."

"A good picture is equivalent to a good deed."

"As we advance in life it becomes more and more difficult, but in fighting the difficulties the inmost strength of the heart is developed."

Fedor "The Last Emperor" Emelianenko v. Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva - 2/12/11

Say it isn't so! Fedor loses for the 2nd time in a row. The loss is to Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. Previous loss to Fabricio Werdum. I am glad to hear that Fedor still has the fight in him to go on. Allthough he lost at the Strikeforce Grand Prix, he lost to someone that looks like Andre the Giant. The Werdum loss was not disappointing because Werdum is a known and accomplished BJJ practitioner in MMA circles. These two losses should not overshadow the Fedor immortal legacy.

You are still the Emperor in my book, Fedor.

Anderson "The Spider" Silva v. Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort - 2/6/11

Are you kidding me? This fight was promoted as Anderson Silva's ultimate test, and what does he do 3 minutes and 25 seconds into a slow first round, a front-kick to the chin. KO. Good night Vitor.

Mr. Silva, the Karate Kid called, he wants his kick back, and what the hell is Steven Segal doing in your corner. What next, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Anderson credits the kick to Mr. Segal, who is an accomplished Aikido Master.

I think everyone is waiting to see the fight that must take place, Anderson Silva v. Georges "Rush" St-Pierre.

Jay-Z, born December 4, 1969

By the time I got to record my first album, I was 26, I didn't need pen or paper - my memory had been trained just to listen to a song, think of the words, and lay them to tape.

Hip-hop is more about attaining wealth. People respect success. They respect big. They don't even have to like your music. If you're big enough, people are drawn to you.

I'm a mirror. If you're cool with me, I'm cool with you, and the exchange starts. What you see is what you reflect. If you don't like what you see, then you've done something. If I'm standoffish, that's because you are.

I've never looked at myself and said that I need to be a certain way to be around a certain sort of people. I've always wanted to stay true to myself, and I've managed to do that. People have to accept that.

My thing is related to who I am as a person. The clothes are an extension of me. The music is an extension of me. All my businesses are part of the culture, so I have to stay true to whatever I'm feeling at the time, whatever direction I'm heading in. And hopefully, everyone follows.

February 2012

If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere else.

Marriage is miserable unless you find the right person that is your soulmate and that takes a lot of looking.

I sing about life.

If you cannot find peace within yourself, you will never find it anywhere else.

War is not the answer, because only love can conquer hate.

Music, not sex, got me aroused.

Most fear stems from sin; to limit one's sins, one must assuredly limit one's fear, thereby bringing more peace to one's spirit.

Negotiating means getting the best of your opponent.

(August 4, 1901 – July 6, 1971)

"If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know."

"There are some people that if they don't know, you can't tell them."

"You blows who you is."

"There is two kinds of music, the good, and the bad. I play the good kind."

"What we play is life."

"The memory of things gone is important to a jazz musician."

"All music is folk music. I ain't never heard a horse sing a song."

"We all do 'do, re, mi,' but you have got to find the other notes yourself."

Eric Clapton

Born on March 30, 1945

I just managed to convince my grandmother that it was a worth while that was something to do, you know, and when I did finally get the guitar, it didn't seem that difficult to me, to be able to make a good noise out of it.

I've got the god given talent or the god given opportunity better put, to let that out in a harmless way you know, and I don't know what it does to you, I don't really know.

I mean, it didn't matter to me that there were people, it didn't matter that I was shy Just the sound was so captivating that it helped me to get rid of those inhibitions.

It was stumbling on to really the bible of the blues, you know, and a very powerful drug to be introduced to us and I absorbed it totally, and it changed my complete outlook on music.

It's very dependent on your state of mind. And your emotional state as well. And a lot of it comes pouring out, you don't really have that much control with it.

Yeah, it is, because it's a real discovery of your inner resources, you know. That's what my character is all about and what my playing is all about. But to get up there and just go inside and draw out something that makes you feel good first and foremost.

JIMMY PAGE (Jan 9, 1944)

I may not believe in myself, but I believe in what I'm doing.

I always felt if we were going in to do an album, there should already be a lot of structure already made up so we could get on with that and see what else happened.

I always believed in the music we did and that's why it was uncompromising.

AUG 2011

All you need is love.

All we are saying is give peace a chance.

Reality leaves a lot to the imagination.

Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.

Love is the answer, and you know that for sure; Love is a flower, you've got to let it grow.

Our society is run by insane people for insane objectives. I think we're being run by maniacs for maniacal ends and I think I'm liable to be put away as insane for expressing that. That's what's insane about it.

I'm not going to change the way I look or the way I feel to conform to anything. I've always been a freak. So I've been a freak all my life and I have to live with that, you know. I'm one of those people.

The more I see the less I know for sure.

When you're drowning, you don't say 'I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,' you just scream.

You have to be a bastard to make it, and that's a fact. And the Beatles are the biggest bastards on earth.

Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.

We've got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can't just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it's going to get on by itself. You've got to keep watering it. You've got to really look after it and nurture it.

There's nothing you can know that isn't known.

Surrealism had a great effect on me because then I realised that the imagery in my mind wasn't insanity. Surrealism to me is reality.

Part of me suspects that I'm a loser, and the other part of me thinks I'm God Almighty.

Guilt for being rich, and guilt thinking that perhaps love and peace isn't enough and you have to go and get shot or something.

JULY 2011

JIMI HENDRIX (1942-1970)

Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.

I don't have nothing to regret at all in the past, except that I might've unintentionally hurt somebody else or something.

I have this one little saying, when things get too heavy just call me helium, the lightest known gas to man

I just hate to be in one corner. I hate to be put as only a guitar player, or either only as a songwriter, or only as tap dancer. I like to move around.

I try to use my music to move these people to act.

I was trying to do too many things at the same time, which is my nature. But I was enjoying it, and I still do enjoy it.

I'm the one that has to die when it's time for me to die, so let me live my life, the way I want to.

We have time, there's no big rush.

When I die, I want people to play my music, go wild and freak out and do anything they want to do.

In order to change the world, you have to get your head together first.

It all has to come from inside, though, I guess.

It's funny the way most people love the dead. Once you are dead, you are made for life.

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

Music is my religion.

When I die, just keep playing the records.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

Robert Johnson - Words of Wisdom

"Nothing will see us through the age we're entering but high consciousness, and that comes hard. We don't have a good, modern myth yet, and we need one."

"History has always been a series of pendulum swings, but the individual doesn't have to get caught in that."

- Robert Johnson

True Grit

Critic: Lance Agdigos

Great movie. Jeff Bridges was a standout. Matt Damon's character was funny and quirky. To be expected from a Coen Brothers film. Damon was a comedic genius in "The Informant!" The young Hailee Steinfeld was a force to reckon with and held her own with the company she was in.

The dude abides and will shoot your sorry a&%.

The Tourist

Critic: Lance Agdigos

Let's go to Venice, Italy. Assassin's Creed players will recognize and enjoy seeing the beautiful rooftops of Venice and the landmark St. Mark's Campanile/Basilica bell tower. Add to that a beautiful and captivating Angelina Jolie, who had a strong and powerful performance. Seeing Johnny Depp without make-up and creepy lighting is refreshing. He owned this role and added dimension to the character. Paul Bethany always adds class and emotion to films he gets involved in. In case you don't know who Paul Bethany is, he's the leading angel from Legion. I also liked his earlier work in Knight's Tale when he played Geoffrey Chaucer.

Again great choice for location, next time I'm in Venice I want that hotel suite.

No, I've never been to Venice and no I do not have that kind of cash flow.

Black Swan

Critic: Lance Agdigos

Disturbing psychological thriller. Great writing. Very insightful portrayal. Directed by Darren Aronofsky who's most recent work include The Wrestler, The Fountain, and Requiem for a Dream. This movie is dark, intimate and powerful. Natalie Portman was riveting in the lead role. Great acting by Barbara Hershey and Mila Kunis. It was nice to see Winona Ryder in a big film again. Vincent Cassel was outstanding. I liked him in Ocean's Twelve.

Now I see what the Oscar buzz is all about.

The Other Guys, Tuna and Lion

Will Ferrell (Allen) and Mark Wahlberg (Terry)

Terry: Do you know what I just did? I just walked out that door saw a couple of detectives and I was about to start badmouthing you behind your back, but I stopped myself because my Pops taught me that a man who talks behind somebody's back is a coward.

Allen: Wow I actually appreciate that.

Terry: Good , cause I'm gonna tell you directly to your face.

Allen: No, you don't have to.

Terry: No, I don't like you. I think you're a fake cop. The sound of your piss hitting the urinal, it sounds feminine. If we were in the wild, I would attack you. Even if you were'nt in my food chain I would go out of my way to attack you. If I were a lion and you were a tuna, I would swim out in the middle of the ocean and friggin eat you and then I'd bang your tuna girlfriend.

Allen: OK, first off, a lion? swimming in the ocean? Lions don't like water, If you'd place it near a river or some sort of fresh water source, that'd make sense. But you find yourself in the ocean, with 20 foot waves, I'm assuming its off the coast of South Africa, coming up against a full grown 800 pound tuna, with his 20 or 30 friends, you'd lose that battle, you'd lose that battle 9 times out of 10, and guess what, you've wandered into our school of tuna, and we now have a taste of lion, we've talked to ourselves, we've communicated. And said, you know what, lion tastes good, let's go get some more lion. We developed a system to establish a beachhead and aggressively hunt you and your family, and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.

Terry: How are you gonna do that?!?

Allen: We'll construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We'll be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. It's not gonna be days at a time, but an hour an hour forty-five, no problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live go back to the sea, get more oxygen and then stalk you. You just lost at your own game, you're outgunned and outmanned.

Did that go the way you thought it was gonna go(shakes his head)??? Nope.

Terry: Spills entire cup of coffee on him.

Mark Bocek v. Ben "Smooth" Henderson - Ben Henderson

Randy "The Natural" Couture v. Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida - Randy Couture

Jason Brilz v. Vladimir "The Janitor" Matyushenko - Vladimir Matyushenko

Mark "The Machine" Hominick v. Jose "Scarface" Aldo - Jose Aldo by KO, vicious leg kicks/ground and pound OR deadly elbows.

Jake Shields v. Georges "Rush" St. Pierre - GSP by KO, pure athletism, highly technical and well-rounded, to add to that, Freddie Roach has been training him on Boxing.

Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire, Jr v. Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel - 2/19/2011

A proud night for Filipinos in the world of boxing, as Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire defeats Fernando "Cochulito" Montiel for the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) bantamweight crowns at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. A devastating Donaire 2nd round headshot KO by right uppercut caused Montiel to fall on his back. When he admirably tried to get off his back, it was all great instinct as he was clearly still out of it. His body could not respond as his legs spasmed and twitched on the ring floor.

Montiel, the true warrior that he is was able to get up. Despite the referee, Russell Mora's great show of respect to the fallen champion by allowing the fight to continue, it was a formality at that point. Donaire follows Montiel to the ropes and lands a left hook until the referee is forced to stop the fight to prevent further damage to Montiel, who was still shaky from the violent right uppercut.

Donaire improves his record to 26-1 with 18 KOs. Montiel, a true veteran of the sport, falls to 44-3-2. An outstanding and impressive fight record. The win gives Donaire a world title in his third weight class.

Donaire is currently ranked 5th as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. He is a talented switch hitter with the ability to fight southpaw or orthodox and with 18 KOs out of his 26 wins, he has the evident power to back it up. He is fast, powerful and an intelligent fighter. Great fight discipline. Donaire's father was an amateur boxer and army veteran. Glenn Donaire, the older brother, also a professional boxer.

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao v. "Sugar" Shane Mosley - 5/7/11

The fight is scheduled for May 7th, 2011 at Las Vegas MGM Grand. Despite the fact that Shane Mosley is a class act and is definitely capable, he just seems too slow for Manny Pacquiao at the moment. After watching the Mayweather v. Mosley fight, Mosley seemed slow and stiff. Perhaps if Shane Mosley shows up in his peak form, he could give Manny a run for his money. However, you cannot count out Shane Mosley, he is a warrior, and has KO capability. Pacquiao will have to be careful.

Manny Pacquiao is at the top of his game. Its difficult to fathom where there is room for improvement in the Pacquiao arsenal, although if anyone can prove me wrong, it is Congressman Manny Pacquiao. Pacman is the complete package, thanks to his natural talent, fight instinct and the guidance of the venerable Freddie Roach in his corner. Manny's ring generalship and strong team dynamic is second to none.

Manny Pacquiao to win, the pride of the Philippines.
